Issues with Following

Hi everyone,
I realise that there have been issues with joining the blog and becoming followers for some of you. I'm not sure why this is, it's possibly something to do with security and the school email address or possibly something higher up to do with the website or Google accounts.

I am also having issues in that I can't upload any photos :(

Anyway! To those of you who have been able to join - Well done! Good thinking to use your family's email address or your own personal ones.
To those of you who haven't been as lucky - Don't despair! You can still look at the blog and interact with it - I think!

Keep me posted, and keep trying to join - one day you might be lucky!

Backyard Visionary - John Britten

One of the Mystery Inventors we have had featured was John Britten. He invented the "Britten V1100" motorcycle that went on to break numerous speed records.
We watched a documentary made in the early 1990's about his journey to Daytona to race the bike.
See the link below where you can watch the whole thing.
Watch "Backyard Visionary"

We're very proud to be from this little country and have such amazing people changing the world.
Sadly in 1995, John died at age 45 after a short battle with melanoma.
See the link below for more info about John.

Break in the Road - Become musical composers!

This is one of my favourite music websites!
You move through the city and collect sounds. Then you can arrange the sounds into a piece of music.
Layer funky beats over tuneful singing and someone beating a rug :)

Joan McKay's Museum Visit

To kick off our "Inventions" topic we visited Mrs Joan McKay who lives across the road from school. She has a big shed full of all sorts of things from the past. Each person will choose an invention and follow its various stages of development, through to its modern form.
Here are some pictures!

Very wise!

An Ashburton invention to let the farmer know when the water had reached a point. A little asprin would dissolve and release a lock and the flag would go up. This saved the farmer walking up and down the paddocks all day seeing where the water was up to.

Here is a short clip of the old record player in action.

Into Term 2

Welcome back folks!
I hope you had a restful break, we are straight back into it this term.

In CCM our topic for the term is "Inventions and Innovations."
The concepts we will be developing understandings of are:
- Understand how and why innovation can occur, and
- Understand the challenges innovation can create.

We will be focussing on NZ inventions and innovations in class with opportunities to research ones from further afield.

On Friday we will be visiting Mrs Joan McKay's museum to check out all the technology over there. It's a museum with a twist as everything works and we are able to play with all the items. Over there the children will be thinking about the development of inventions and how they change over time.

I am running a class competition to do with NZ Inventors this term. Up for grabs is a super dooper prize that won't be revealed until the end of the term (but trust me, you want it)!!
Every so often (once a week at least) I will feature a mystery inventor/invention. The class will get 9 clues as to who/what it is. If they correctly identify the inventor/invention after the first clue they get 9 points, if they correctly identify them/it after the second guess they get 8 points and so on.
The winner is the person with the most points at the end of the term.

Check out this link to see an impressive "invention"!
